HISTORY
The soil around Miles, Texas, is good for two things – grazing stock and raising cotton. The opportunity to do both on an abundance of
land brought many German immigrants to this area of West Texas in the mid-to-late 1800’s.

There were many Lutherans among these pioneer families and they soon formed a common bond. On May 1, 1910, twenty-three of these
Lutheran families organized their own church.

With most of its members involved in agriculture, the church’s finances over the years have often risen and fallen according to cotton
crops or the price of cattle. For eight years the early congregation borrowed another church’s structure. In 1918 they purchased a former
Presbyterian church in Miles and in 1929 it was moved to the congregation’s present location. A growing congregation and a better
financial picture allowed the congregation to erect a new church and annex in 1949.

Until the mid-1920’s services had been conducted at Trinity in German, despite the outlawing of the language in many places in the
United States during World War I. German was then alternated with English until being discontinued entirely in 1958.

The congregation today is very active with two women’s circles, a men’s group, a fellowship lunch club and a quilting group. A Kids’
Event held several times a year attracts close to 50 children from throughout the community.

The church is a big supporter of its Cub and Boy Scout Troops. Many projects are also done in conjunction with the fraternal
organization, Thrivent for Lutherans.

A community Candlelight Christmas Eve Service that has been held for many years attracts 200 or more people, and every summer,
Trinity participates in a tri-church Vacation Bible School with the local Catholic and Methodist churches.

In the church registry one can still find the same surnames as those original German pioneers. However, over the years the church has
welcomed many new members into its family. Some have been of other faiths.

STAINED GLASS WINDOWS
Beginning in the 1980’s, families of the congregation donated 9 stained glass windows in memory or in honor of family members. These
were in addition to an earlier window from 1960, and a stained glass insert in the church steeple. The congregation is extremely proud of
these windows and the comforting and peaceful feelings they inspire in those that see them.

TAPESTRIES
The late Lucille Salling, a longtime member, created three large tapestries for Trinity. Beginning with the Advent season, eight of Salling’
s Christmas banners also are hung in the sanctuary.

CARILLON
Three times a day, beautiful chimes play throughout the Miles community from Trinity’s carillon.
Trinity welcomes, equips and sends people into the world in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit
